WK1: Coming Up With A Game

Team Progress

First, our team met up to discuss what kind of game we would like to make. Very early on, we decided that we were going to go with a 2D platform game. With that in mind, we used Google Docs to lay out different themes and genres we could potentially explore (ex: medieval, space, underwater, comedy, etc). Eventually, we decided on a post-apocalyptic horror genre where the player's objective is to get from point A to point B while surviving against dark and terrifying creatures through stealth. After having thought of this concept, we determined the mechanics of our game and some potential interactions that could take place relating to the concept. We outlined the details of what we've come up with in our game proposal and presented it during the greenlight review.

My Contribution

As project manager, I made sure that the team was up to date on all the things that we had to accomplish for the week. I got us started on brainstorming and contributed my own ideas and suggestions for themes, genres, gameplay elements, and mechanics, which were all outlined in a document that I created for the team to share their thoughts in. Once we've met up and started finalizing our ideas, I helped write content for our game proposal document and made sure to peer edit the work that my team did in the process. Lastly, I also created some concept art for our game, proposing a potential art style we could use for when we start creating assets down the line.

Reflection

From my perspective, a notable problem we encountered was coming up with an innovative feature for our game. Part of the criteria for this project is to create a game that is unique in some sense and our team initially struggled with coming up with a solid idea for how to do just that. To address this, we really took the time to break down every aspect of our game that we've thought of so far to really understand how everything will come together to create the experience that we want for our players.
