Week 1 Progress

Summary:

We held a meeting on Sunday the 8th around 10:30am. We started to brainstorm in the genre each member is in favor, apparently we all agreed with horror and where later on we added apocalypse. At the end of iterations, we finally decided to do a horror adventure action game, involving puzzle platform and stealth in a post-apocalypse setting with big eyed monster. We also talked about the type of mechanics we wanted to implement, the back story of the game and art style we were going for.

Contributions:

I scanned the team contract for the PM. In the meeting I gave ideas, helped settle down mechanics and assign roles. I suggested to make a two world like The Lord of The Rings where the character sees different things when the candle is off. I also suggested to combine the idea of “collectable candles” and “will-o-wisp” from Jameson. I looked for inspirations like Inside (Playdead, 2016) for art style and stealth mechanism, Journey (Thatgamecompany, 2012) for the art style. I made some sketches for the character and the big eye monster.

Reflections:

While iteration, we kind of struggled to come up with a unique feature and the selling point of the game because we tried to ask each other if the idea is feasibility and how could we get “funding” when we propose. I felt like we are kind of stack with the genre we were going for and kept on giving up ideas too quick before further establishing.

Team Suggestions:

  • When we give up an idea, we should still keep it aside first, not discarding the idea totally yet. Maybe the idea will become a good idea later on.

  • I highly suggest we should all have comment for the code we are writing. Although I am the lead programmer, but everyone else also want to write a little bit code, so it’s very useful if there is at least minimum comment to indicate what the code is for and some explanation if it is possible.

  • Maybe we could experiment with 2.5D.
